Light-Hearted Video Reminds Us About The Importance of Folate

Natural Health Goodies “vid of the day” highlights this crucial need in a fun whimsical way.

Minneapolis, MN – For women, having an optimal level of folate in the body prior to conception is extremely important to a child’s health.

The B-vitamin folic acid (vitamin B9) is required for healthy cell growth and embryo development. Having enough of this important vitamin helps prevent neural tube defects, a major birth defect of the brain and spine.

According to the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health folate supplementation during pregnancy has been shown to reduce the risk of neural tube birth defects by as much as 70%.

Folic acid is also necessary for DNA production, which is crucial for the rapid cell growth needed during early pregnancy for fetal tissue and organ development.

However, As shown in the video the active form of folic acid called methylfolate or simply folate is the preferred form of folic acid for many reasons.

Activated folate is up to seven times more bioavailable than synthetic folic acid. You see, the body needs to convert folic acid into the more bio-available form of folate before mom or baby can get any benefit.

What’s worse is that for many women that conversion can’t happen because of a small genetic mutation called MTHFR. (it effects men and women and about 60% of the US population) Due to this and many other factors many of us have a folate deficiency.

Since the human body cannot make folate on its own it depends on supplementation or diet to acquire folate. The good news is that by taking an active folate supplement our body can get the recommended amount each day.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) states “All women and teen girls who could become pregnant should consume 400 mcg of folic acid daily from supplements, fortified foods, or both. Dietary supplements containing methylfolate might be better than folic acid for individuals who have a certain mutation in a gene called MTHFR because their bodies can use this form more easily.”

Natural Health Goodies would like to remind adults thinking about having a baby of the importance of maintaining the proper level of folate. Choosing the right form of folic acid is just as important as picking the perfect baby name. “Your baby will thank you some day.”
