On AK Galerie: A Contemporary Art Gallery in Berlin

AK Galerie is a charming, contemporary art gallery based in Berlin, the global capital of culture.

The novel art gallery is nestled in a quaint courtyard in Schlüterstraße 70, aptly named in 1879 after the sculptor and builder Andreas Schlüter. Positioned right in the heart of Charlottenburg, the opulent district has a great deal to offer, including an impressive number of other delightful galleries for avid art lovers to pop into.

If you begin to grow peckish during your culture cruise, you are only a couple of minutes walk from the lively Kantstraße. Known as the “Asian food street” of Berlin, the lengthy boulevard features delectable cuisines from Vietnamese, to Japanese, and Thai to Indian. The architecture surrounding Savignyplatz boasts a Parisian atmosphere, a beloved 24-hour cafe-bar, and a number of theaters also enrich the neighborhood. There is no shortage of activities in the area.

Navigating 2020

Anna Kimmerle founded AK Galerie in November 2019. Despite studying clinical psychology, the young, German-born gallerist was passionate about the arts. After moving to Berlin six years ago, she soon decided to merge this with her interest in human minds and behavior. This has influenced the style of the artworks shown at the gallery at any time. In particular, the works of Barbara Pecora; the artist whose grand, emotive pieces were exhibited at the gallery’s opening night. Kimmerle believes that it is vital that a work should not simply look aesthetic, but also move the soul.

Before long, plans were made within Berlin, and internationally, including an exhibition that was supposed to take place in Milan, Italy. Unfortunately, 2020 had other plans in the shape of the infamous Covid-19 virus. A phenomenon that has since affected the world in ways no one could have predicted.

AK Friends & AK Support

As a new art gallery, the going was tough, but Anna Kimmerle and her assistant were quick to adapt. Inspired by the many ways communities all over the world fought to support each other, the AK team came up with “AK Friends Live” and “AK Support”. The first of the two initiatives takes place on Instagram, and was motivated by AK Galerie’s commitment to being a cultivator of culture. As seen in the impromptu balcony concerts in Italy, creativity helps to spread positivity and a little hope too.

The Berlin art gallery began to contact multi-disciplinary artists in Berlin and beyond. The idea to collaborate with creators, both novice and established, and spread a love and appreciation of art has been hugely successful. Thus far, they have featured DJs, painters, a tattoo artist, and more. Kimmerle also had a discussion about how to evolve in the creative industry during the lockdown with co-founder of The Photo Academy, Raphaël Devreker. The endeavor still continues, usually taking place during the weekends. Follow the AK Galerie Instagram account to catch when the next AK Friends Live session will take place!

“AK Support” is also an ongoing project which involves selling merchandise designed by AK Galerie artists. The first of these were hoodies featuring the work of Barbara Pecora and Romulo Kuranyi. Once all the items in the first batch are sold, a portion of the profits will be given to a chosen charity.

AK Galerie is committed to support in other ways too. Though artwork can be pricey, especially original pieces, the art gallery has the option of organizing payment installment plans for customers. Your dream painting doesn’t have to remain a dream at all.
