Schneider Electric has announced the launch of its grid operations platform as a service on Microsoft Azure, which aims to offer remote access to utilities for a scalable, flexible architecture to augment grid maintenance.

Schneider Electric, which provides energy and automation digital solutions, announced the service as part of its EcoStruxure Grid portfolio.

Backed by Microsoft Azure’s open cloud computing platform, the deployment aims to enable grid planning and operations solutions hosted on the cloud.

“Microsoft’s commitment to this collaboration is helping drive digital transformation for people, organisations and the industry at large,” stated Alexis Grenon, SVP digital grid at Schneider Electric.

“Together we are working to help our customers manage more reliable, efficient, sustainable and secure grids today and into the future.”

Darryl Willis, corporate vice president, energy industry at Microsoft, added: “Microsoft is supporting Schneider Electric in delivering business solutions that allow customers to focus more on their operations and less on managing software infrastructure. This further enables Schneider Electric to address the utility industry’s most pressing business challenges with the flexibility, reliability and security of Azure.”

According to Schneider Electric, traditional ways of deploying software solutions and associated services are changing, especially when it comes to grid management.

In light of this, the grid operations platform as a service aims to provide operators value with simplified deployments, increased scalability and reduced maintenance while enabling managed and advisory services.

Part of Schneider’s EcoStruxure Grid solution portfolio, Schneider Electric has stated their hope for the service to support the growth of distributed energy resources (DERs), microgrids, energy communities and other flexible resources. This will be done across digitally planned, designed and operated lifecycles.

The portfolio also represents part of Schneider’s entry into operations management, represented by their with EcoStruxure DERMS (distributed energy resource management systems) and EcoStruxure ADMS (advanced distribution management system) on Azure.
