$1.9 Million in Taxpayer Money to be Saved with Energy-Saving Improvements for Two of Ohio’s Largest State Prisons

Today, MG Energy takes the next step in overhauling the energy systems of two major prisons in Central Ohio. In early summer of 2019, the Mansfield-based mechanical systems company was selected by the Ohio Facility Construction Commission (OFCC) to design, build and install multi-million-dollar, energy-saving improvements at Mansfield and Richland State Correctional Institutions. MG Energy was selected from three short-listed firms for “best value” for the award.

“Boilers, pumps and other pieces of technology will be installed in the coming months. Once colder weather arrives, we will move into the next phase, installing low-flow plumbing fixtures like toilets, sinks and showers,” David Metzger, president, MG Energy, Inc., said.

The bond financing by Ohio Air Quality Development Authority (OAQDA), secured in June 2019 for $8.7 Million, focuses on rebuilding the facilities’ crumbling infrastructure to (1) save taxpayer money with a net savings of $1,926,385, and (2) cut utility consumption by one-third. Specific improvements include HVAC, boilers and pumps, domestic hot water systems and lighting.

“This energy conservation project will reduce utility bills, operations and maintenance at both facilities by utilizing new boilers, interior LED lighting and other systems for enhanced energy management at both institutions,” Metzger said.

This project will not only save taxpayer money, it will also significantly reduce SO2, NOx and CO2 emissions. An equivalent savings would be eliminating the emissions from 216 passenger vehicles, 1.1 million pounds of coal burned, and the energy use of 122 residential homes.

Leading-edge tech will also be incorporated. Once the project is complete, energy usage data will be streamed to the cloud and evaluated, calculated and delivered in a concise annual energy savings report. For domestic hot water, LegioMix valves (preventing Legionnaires disease) and low-flow plumbing fixtures will be installed in all buildings.

Unlike many companies, the majority of both the design work and labor will be self-performed by MG Energy’s skilled personnel—not contracted out. Work is now underway, and is expected to be completed by June 2021, while the full net savings will amount over a maximum of 15 years.

This is the second project performed by MG Energy at Mansfield and Richland State Correctional. In the first project, MG Energy was responsible for installing 34 high-efficiency boilers/hot-water heaters, replacing all facility fixtures with efficient LEDs, and installing all-new Direct Digital HVAC controls (DDC).
